UPDATE

Burlington Police continue to investigate a motor vehicle crash that originated from a vehicle pursuit starting in Elon. At approximately 1:44 PM the Town of Elon requested assistance from the Burlington Police Department in stopping a 1985 Honda driven by Joshua Michael Evans, W/M, 23, of 2642 Overhill Loop Rd., McLeansville, NC. Evans had been stopped earlier by Elon Campus Police and as a result of their investigation fled the scene. The Town of Elon assisted the campus police and the pursuit entered the City of Burlington on W. Front St. Evans’ vehicle matched the description of a suspect vehicle involved in a series of Break-Ins in the same general area. “Officers were in the area investigating the break-in s at the same time Elon was entering the city pursuing a similar vehicle. It was later determined that Evans was not involved in those break-ins,” said Capt. Greg Seel.

Evans continued into Burlington on Front St. but refused to stop for police officers. By the time Evans’ location could be called in and determined the possible reason for the pursuit, Evans crashed his vehicle at the intersection of Front and Lexington. “ From the time the pursuit was called in, to the time the crash occurred was a total of 1 min and 13 secs. That is a very short time to make the determination to stop a pursuit. In this case the supervisor had made the call, but Evans had already crashed.”

As Evans entered the intersection of Front and Lexington, he struck a 1999 Isuzu, driven by Tina Medley, causing $500.00 in damage. He then struck a 1998 Honda driven by Martha Johnson, causing $1,000.00 damage. He then struck a 2007 Ford driven by Elon Officer Thomas Walker, causing $1,500.00 damage. Evans then fled the scene on foot but was caught by Pfc. Chris Edwards.

Evans has been charged with Felony Speeding to Elude Arrest, Resist, Delay and Obstruct, 3 counts of Hit and Run and 2 counts of Careless and Reckless driving. He has been transported to Alamance Regional Medical Center for evaluation of minor injuries.

Evans has not been before a Magistrate to set a bond.

Additional charges may result as the investigation continues.

No injuries were reported other than those Evans may have received as a result of the crash. “This entire series of events could have been avoided if Evans had not made the decision to flee from the police,” said Seel.
