| Burlington Police investigated a series of Attempted Armed Robberies |

On May 18, 2008 at about 3:30pm, Caitlyn Holmes, W/F/17, Elon, NC was using the Wachovia ATM located at 2832 S. Church St., Burlington. Holmes was approached by a W/M who demanded the money she had withdrawn from the ATM. The suspect showed Holmes a large knife. Holmes was able to safely leave the scene and report the incident to police. The suspect did not get any money from Holmes. At about 4:40pm, Police were dispatched to the intersection of Webb and Tarleton Ave regarding a disturbance. Further investigation revealed the suspect in the disturbance had tried to rob Israel Morales at knifepoint. Morales, operating a Taxi for The Driver Taxi Company, was able to subdue the suspect until police arrived. The suspect was identified as John Patrick Cuffe, W/M/20; last known address was Allied Churches Homeless Shelter, 206 N. Church St., Burlington. Cuffe was identified as the suspect in both attempted robberies. Cuffe was charged with two counts of Attempted Armed Robbery, and Beating Cab Fare. A second, unidentified suspect may have an involvement in the robberies. Police are looking for a W/M, 40-50 years old, driving a tan or gold Jeep Cherokee.
