Have a Happy Holiday
from the
Burlington Fire Department
Remember! Keep it a Happy Holiday by having a Safe Holiday!

    When Decorating:
  • Use non-combustible decorations as much as possible.
  • Buy fresh cut trees and keep them watered. Remove trees when they become dry.
    • Test needles to ensure freshness by bending the needles.  The tree is fresh if the needles bend and don't break.
  • Inspect decorative lights before use
    • Look for exposed wiring and untie knotted wiring
    • Discard if damaged
    • Only use lights that are listed by Underwriters Lab.  A copy of the UL symbol is below.
  • Limit the use of extension cords!
    • Extension cords should not be used as permanent wiring.
  • Do not exceed the manufacturers recommendation on the number of extension cords and/or lights connected together.  Exceeding this recommendation will overload the wiring!
  • Keep live trees away from all heat sources.  This will help prevent the tree from drying out.
  • Do not leave decorative lights turned on.
    • Leaving lights on will dry a live tree out and increase the likelihood of a fire.

Ever wondered what would happen if your tree were to catch fire?  Click on the You-Tube link below to find out!

Christmas Tree Fire

This is what the Underwriter's Lab symbol looks like.  This symbol means what you are buying has been tested to prevent problems.

      When Cooking:
    • Never leave cooking unattended.
    • Keep cooking out of the reach of children.
    • Have the right size lid for the pot being used available to extinguish fires.
      • Placing the lid on top of a flamming pot is the best way to put out the fire.
    • Follow the instructions when cooking with a deep fat fryer.
      • Do not use inside
      • Measure the amount of oil needed by using water before you begin cooking.
    • Have a 5 pound ABC fire extinguisher available for use.
      • ABC means it work on the three most common types of fires including grease fires.

Ever wonder what would happen if you do not properly measure grease when using a deep fat, turkey style fryer?  Trouble
