A little bit of job satisfaction

The Johnny Law ChroniclesI used to be assigned to my department's domestic violence unit. It was a horrible gig. I went from working outside as a bike cop in a busy district to riding a desk. I was used to dealing with huge drunken crowds and bar fights daily. It was quite the exciting job. My new assignment forced me to work in a cubicle reviewing poorly written reports and making phone calls. While a cop always has to deal with paperwork, domestic violence took it to new levels. I remember going to my first day in that unit and getting briefed on my new duties and getting a sinking feeling in my stomach.

Let's just say I knew exactly what Vic was feeling during the ending of The Shield.

 CopCAST Episode 99 - Almost A Millionaire

CopCast PodcastThis is a happy week for Morgan since he finally got his Verizon FIOS service up and running. Look out world you better prepare for an onslaught of 12 second videos. Mack is in quite a fix, 30 centimeters (11 inches) of snow and a broken snow blower means manual labor unless he can con an intern into shoveling his driveway. Rich nearly became a millionaire this week. Unfortunately, the guy who wanted him to "stand as the next of kin" for 10 million dollars got booted off Cops Online. So close and yet so far.

This week a homeless man helps the FBI pop a robber. Will a pallbearer Tase? Oh, yea. Aren't dogs supposed to protect their owners? Fake cops, traffics stops and YouTube - they make it so easy! Please remove your shoes ladies. Note to self, don't leave butt prints on store windows. Have a plan before you steal an ATM machine. Older woman should have sold tickets to sex show. An assault with a dead turkey saves a lady from thief.

 On holiday eating and shopping

View from the CopI went to Cincinnati for Thanksgiving.

I had a nice dinner and then complained about how much I ate-then had another piece of pumpkin pie. I like pumpkin pie at 3 a.m. when it's ice cold. I never had a taste for the pecan pie as much as pumpkin.

We go to Cincinnati at least once a year. Detective Sandy requires this for her Gold Star Chili fix. She is obsessed to the point of being scary. I like it too but she's in her own weird Gold Star Chili zone. Going up I-75, the first Gold Star is in Lexington at Man O' War Boulevard. I know this because I'm required to stop here, not two exits down the road, but here, regardless of time of day.

CopCAST Episode 98 - Puppy Love

CopCast PodcastThis week CopCAST has truly gone international! Morgan broadcasted from his vacation resort in Cancun, Mexico, Mack broadcasted from his outpost in Timmins, Ontario, Canada and Rich broadcasted from the Republic of Salem, located in Virginia.

The inmates in an Indiana jail get screwed by . . . well, other inmates. A German teen has a blast in the toilet. A Canadian drug gang member eats his way out of jail. In Indiana, no tickets so no tickets. Seattle cops are cleared of all charges from the Stugis shooting. Houston cops sue for fuzzy face rights. Quebec City police officers find bad jammer. A taxi driver delivers a robber to South Carolina police. And they called it puppy love - no, really!

Speed can be a sure killer

View from the CopSomeone said something in my last blog entry about the car that recent crashed on 400.

120-plus MPH and all it took was one swerve and it's the ball game, folks. Ever seen a car going that fast? I mean this guy's luck was definitely not there as far as hitting the bridge abutment but at that speed, his luck was running out fast because going south on 400 towards 285 gets more and more crowded. From what I can tell they don't know why he was doing that fast.

Reaction time is almost non-existent at that speed and on GA 400 at that time of day it was suicidal. (That's not to say that's what this incident was about.)

 View from the Cop

View from the CopSan Diego is a cool place if you've never been. There is plenty to do and even in November, the weather is really good; 80's and a lot of sunshine.

But during a recent visit there for a conference I noticed another side to the city. San Diego has some of the world's worst drivers-yes, even compared to us.

I was stationed in San Diego when I got out of the Navy a few years back - well, a lot of years - when the Rolling Stones were on only their fourth farewell tour and before Joan Rivers looked Asian.

 Episode 97 - Golden Shower

CopCast PodcastThe California Kid is back in Virginia. That means that the 12 second video clips and the IACP conference are over. Mack did his "This Old House" imitation last week. Rich really did not accomplish much of anything but he had fun doing it.

We start off this week with the special delivery of a rape subject - to the police station. How about a 71 year-old cop that shows no sign of slowing down? A Florida deputy get into hot water as a result of his alarm clock idea. No more freedom of expression in the Seattle parks if it includes bare butts. I am going to run from you now. Could you hold my driver's license? A Wisconsin cop is pissed off. Will a mule deer Tase? A day in the life of a Flathead County, Montana deputy. No money available for your robbery? File a complaint.

CopCAST Episode 96 - The Rooster

CopCast PodcastThis week Morgan was able to stop packing for his trip to the IACP conference in San Diego long enough to do the show.  Mack did a good job pulling himself to the microphone, which is more than he can say for that charity tug of war he did this week.  Rich found out that there is a four o'clock in the morning too as he started his midnight rotation.  Fortunately, we were able to get together for another great show.

Apparently there were some unusual boulders in the streets of Boulder, Colorado but the cops "busted" them.  The Dark Knight made sure that a dark Halloween stayed safe for trick or treaters.  A Texas cop got credit for busting a car thief and got his truck back at the same time.  A Pennsylvania man is busted twice in six hours for DUI.  Talk about high tech!  How about a GPS chastity belt?  What would you do if someone made 7,000 emergency calls? We agree with you!  Breaking into a police station and stealing cop stuff is not a good idea despite what that alcohol is telling your brain.  This chicken rules the roost but not the cops.

CopCAST Episode 95 - The Epilleptic Machine

CopCast PodcastThis has been a tough week for the CopCAST crew. Morgan has been pouring it on in preparation for the IACP conference. Mack has had several tough incidents occur that necessitated long hours, not to mention his promotion review preparations. If that wasn't bad enough, Rich was forced to spend Halloween looking at scantily clad college co-eds (well someone had to do it).

We started things off with a British driver that likes "toying" with the German police. A woman tries to smuggle sausage across the Mexican border but it was a waste - or not! A cop perpetuates the stereotype by stealing pastries from a coffee shop. A fake cop tries to screw a hooker out of - well, you get the picture. Here, hold my beer and watch me play chicken with that car - that police car! How about a little frozen shrimp? Let's flashback to the naked chimney burglar. A dumb bank robber - is it an oldie? He got the car he drove to court for a steal.

 Good hardware deters burglars

View from the CopMany burglars will only spend about a minute trying to defeat the locks holding them out of your house. A combination of good neighbors and good locks can add up to a big deterrent to a burglar.

Probably about half of the burglaries we see involve the bad guy coming in an unlocked door or window. So first things first, lock them up. If your front door does not have a dead bolt, get one. A good dead bolt should have a 1 ½ to 2" throw. Make sure it's well installed.

Sliding doors are sometimes easy access into the home. You can install commercially available locks or use a broomstick or dowel in the inside track to jam the door from sliding open. To prevent the door from being lifted from the track, drill a hole through sliding door frame and the fixed frame then slide a pin through, connected both.
